Brain Tumor Care Roadmap
Brain tumor patients will typically be seen by a variety of specialists. It may seem overwhelming at first, but the information included in this link is intended to prepare patients and families by answering common questions and providing step-by-step care basics.
In addition, our navigation and coordination teams will be there for patients, families and care givers at each stage of treatment.
It is important to note that no two patients’ treatment journeys will be exactly the same. Some patients may be treated by multiple departments, while others may only be treated by one.
Care Coordination Team
The UCLA Brain Tumor Center has a Care Coordination Team designed to help patients and families manage the complexity of diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up across different settings.
The team includes nurse navigators and patient care coordinators.
The nurse navigator handles the clinical and educational sides of care—answering medical questions, explaining treatments, ensuring the patient sees the right doctors.
The patient care coordinator focuses on logistical and administrative support (e.g. scheduling appointments, coordinating between outpatient and inpatient departments).
Together, they work to ensure continuity and seamless communication among all departments, reduce patient burden, and help connect patients with internal UCLA resources and community support.
Patient and Family Support Services
UCLA Health offers a variety of support services to help brain tumor patients and their families navigate treatment, recovery, and the emotional impacts.
Key services include:
Caregiver Support Groups: Offered monthly (Second Thursday) at UCLA's Radiation Oncology facility; designed to support those caring for a patient.
Virtual Support Groups: Held monthly via Zoom for patients and family members to connect with others in similar situations.
Neuropsychiatric & Behavioral Services: The ACCESS Center provides specialized psychiatric, behavioral, and psychological care to help with mood, cognition, adjustment, and other brain tumor–related impacts.
